September 2017 - Left home about 1am Sunday morning for the early morning flight to Tallinn arriving 11.30am (Tallinn time). The only problem with Ryanair flights is the amount of selling they do onboard, hardly relaxing in my opinion. The onboard prices are about as bad as the prices in the airport meaning I buy nothing until I get to my destination. I am sure both airports and airlines would sell much more if they lowered their prices. Whinge over.
The Tallinn airport is not far from the city centre and a short ride by bus, 20 minutes brings you to the centre of Tallinn. The airport is small but new and the design is well thought out. It may be a little crowded at busy times so give plenty of time on returning flights.
Estonia is a small country positioned to the north of Latvia and west of Russia with a population of about 1.3 million. Nearly a third of the population live in the capital city of Tallinn with the next largest city, Tartu around 90,000 inhabitants, located in the south east. Nearly 68% of the population are Estonian with about 25% Russians. It is a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic.
Important dates in the life of Estonia - Independence autonomy declared on 12 April 1917, Independence declared then recognised 24 February 1918, 2 February 1920. Soviet and German occupations from 1940 to 1991. (Government in exile 17 June 1940). Independence restored 20 August 1991 (Independence recognized by the Soviet Union on 6 September 1991). Admitted to the United Nations 17 September 1991 and joined the European Union on 1 May 2004.
The Estonian language is a Finno-Ugric and is related to Finnish and the Sami languages, also distantly to Hungarian. Most of the young people all speak very good English. You will not have any problems as English is widely used together with Russian.
During my stay in Estonia I visited three cities, Tallinn the capital with about 446,000, Tartu population of about 90,000 and Pärnu 39,000 my favourite of the three. September is not the best time to visit this far north and the weather was not that great. You can also visit my blog of my stay in Estonia in September 2017.
